Former baritone for 1960s soul singers The Five Crowns, Ben E King met the right person and suddenly found himself as the lead vocalist for a new band called The Drifters. They were an almost overnight success, with King's sweet voice carrying hits like 'There Goes My Baby' to the top of the charts. Later, King branched into solo work, recording memorable successes such as 'Stand By Me'. Throughout his later career, his release list is sporadic, though all equal to his early work. Most recently, King recorded 1999's 'Shades of Blue'.

Tropfest 2001

The Tropfest Short Film Festival started out in the Tropicana Café several year's ago (hence the name) and has now outgrown this tiny venue to spill over to other nearby cafes as well as a large open air screen in The Domain. It only lasts one night which makes for a more feverish atmosphere at the screenings as nervy, dishevelled directors clutch their cappucino's and ciggies and watch their's and others' creations flicker into life.

Flair is a new flower, plant and garden shop which opened in mid-April. Located in a vast, vaulted room on the south bank of the river, it is full of extraordinary, exotic plant life. It's hard to believe that some of the plants and flowers - all very beautifully colour co-ordinated in whites, creams, greens with the odd splash of vibrant orange or red - are real. Many of them are tropical and nearly all are imported from Holland. Flair also stocks stylish garden furniture, fabulous vases, candles and sea shells.

This 90-year-old Cuban guitarist and singer was first brought to the attention of western audiences by Wim Wenders' film 'Buena Vista Social Club', in which he was one of the stars. He's here in Japan to promote his most recent album, a work which features many sounds, largely from the 1920s and 1930s, similar to those performed in the film. On this tour Segundo is hopefully going to be joined by many of the artistes who appear on his album.
